Description | The resistance to reniform nematode is due to a single gene, Ren(lon), that can be followed in a MAS program with the co-dominate SSR BNl 3279_114 marker, located 1.4cM proximal and the phenotypic marker 'greenfuzz' (l TeOl-F) located 4.5cM distal to Ren(lon). An SNP marker also was developed for rapid screening of large numbers of seed. The introgressed chromosome segment is smaller in lONREN-2 than in lONREN-1. Both lines reduced reniform populations by 95% in growth chamber bioassays in pasteurized soils and by 50-90% in different field soils and years. In the absence of nematodes in the field, growth rate, yield and fiber quality of the lines were similar to that of the Fibermax 958 parent. In the presence of reniform nematodes in the field, the lines often show stunting and yield losses, probably due to enhanced severity of fungal seedling diseases, especially Thielaviopsis root rot. The seedling diseases in lONRENs are diminished by control measures such as fungicides, nematicides, and crop rotation with corn or sorghum, and are negligible in a second year of planting lONRENs in the same field. |

Pedigree | The triple species hybrid (G. hirsutum Oeltapine 14 x G. longicalyx)2 x Gossypium armourianum Kearny (HLA) was crossed and backcrossed for seven generations into G. hirsutum cultivars and single plants were selected for reniform resistance and yield after each generation. The F1 progeny 130-10 and 130-4 from the final cross to Fibermax 958 were used to develop the F2 progeny used for seed production of LONREN-1 and LONREN-2, respectively. |
